چکیده

Spatially-explicit harvest scheduling models that can promote the development of dynamic mature forest patches have been proposed in the past. This paper introduces a formulation that extends these models by allowing the total perimeter of the patches to be constrained or minimized. Test run results suggest that the proposed model can produce solutions with fewer, larger, and more compact patches. In addition, patches are more likely to be temporally connected with this formulation. Methods for identifying the tradeoffs between the net present value of the forest and the size and perimeter of the evolving patches are demonstrated for a hypothetical forest. 1 Corresponding Author: Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Oklahoma State University, 008C Agricultural Hall, Stillwater, OK 74078, USA. Temporal Connectivity of Mature Forest Patches In Spatially-Explicit Harvest Scheduling Models

We present a forest harvest scheduling model that can ensure the temporal con1 nectivity of mature forest habitat over time in a landscape managed for timber production. 2 Past models addressed the spatial aspects of habitat connectivity by requiring that a certain 3 amount of mature forest habitat is retained throughout a planning horizon in contiguous 4 patches of minimum size and age. These ...

Thesis a Spatial Stochastic Programming Model for Timber and Core Area Management under Risk of Stand-replacing Fire

Forest harvest scheduling has been modeled using deterministic and stochastic programming models. Past models seldom address explicit spatial forest management concerns under the influence of natural disturbances. In this research study, we employ multistage full recourse stochastic programming models to explore the challenges and advantages of building spatial optimization models that account ...

Can Retention Harvest Maintain Natural Structural Complexity? A Comparison of Post-Harvest and Post-Fire Residual Patches in Boreal Forest

Variable retention harvest promotes biodiversity conservation in managed boreal forests by ensuring forest continuity and structural complexity. However, do post-harvest and post-fire patches maintain the same structural complexity? This study compares post-harvest and post-fire residual patches and proposes retention modalities that can maintain the same structural complexity as in natural for...

Influence of Mature Overstory Trees on Adjacent 12-Year Regeneration and the Woody Understory: Aggregated Retention versus Intact Forest

Retention harvesting, an approach that intentionally retains legacy features such as mature overstory trees, provides options for achieving ecological objectives. At the same time, retained overstory trees may compete with the nearby recovering understory for resources, and much remains to be learned about potential trade-offs with regeneration objectives, particularly over extended time period...
